GB to Download Time Calculator

Calculate how long it takes to download any file size at your internet speed.

Download Time Calculator

Time (s) = (GB × 8,000,000) ÷ Kbps

How Download Time is Calculated

Internet speeds are measured in bits per second (Kbps, Mbps, Gbps), while file sizes are in bytes (MB, GB, TB). Since 1 byte = 8 bits, you must multiply the file size by 8 before dividing by speed.

Example: Downloading 10 GB at 500 Mbps: (10 × 8,000) ÷ 500 = 160 seconds = 2 min 40 sec.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate download time for a GB file?
Divide the file size in gigabits by your speed in Gbps (or equivalent). Formula: seconds = (GB × 8) ÷ Gbps = (GB × 8,000) ÷ Mbps = (GB × 8,000,000) ÷ Kbps.
How long does it take to download 1 GB at 100 Mbps?
1 GB = 8,000 Mb. 8,000 ÷ 100 = 80 seconds.
How long does it take to download 1 GB at 1 Gbps?
1 GB = 8 Gb. 8 ÷ 1 = 8 seconds.
Why multiply GB by 8?
File sizes are in bytes (GB) but speeds are in bits (Gbps/Mbps/Kbps). There are 8 bits per byte, so 1 GB = 8 Gb.
